Abstract

It is shown that the production of hydrogen sulfide in the myocardium is determined by the level of estradiol: castration of females causes a significant decrease in myocardial H2S content, cystathionine y-lyase (CSE) activity, maximum rate of H2S formation from cysteine with CSE (Vmax), as well as an increase in Michaelis constant (Km) of this enzyme in comparison with the controls. Hormone replacement therapy with estradiol approximates H2S production and CSE kinetic parameters to the levels of the control group.
